Lions International Peace Poster Contest

Vision of Peace

Laura Hodes WINS Lions District 14-K COMPETITION IN

LIONS INTERNATIONAL PEACE POSTER CONTEST

Laura Hodes, a sixth grade student at Lower Macungie Middle School, has taken another step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning the District 14-K Lions Peace Poster competition.

Lower Lehigh Lions Club sponsored two peace poster contests, one of which Hodes won to advance to the district competition.

Hodes’ poster is among more than 350,000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

"Bringing unity to mankind throughout a peaceful world; coming together as one to make a difference and protecting all creatures from becoming extinct is my vision of peace," said Hodes, 12.

The Wescosville girl’s poster was selected by a panel of judges for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, "Vision of Peace."

Judging was held the week of Nov. 21 in Hellertown.

District 14-K Peace Poster Contest Chairman Paul Bealer continues to be impressed by the expression and creativity of the students that were judged in the district poster contest.

"These young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. Each year the visions these children put on paper of their meaning of peace continues to improve and impress," Bealer said. "I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions."

"Hodes’s poster will advance through the multiple district and international levels of competition if she is to be declared the international grand prize winner," Bealer said.

One international grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $2,500. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of $500.

"Our club is cheering for Ms. Hodes as her poster advances to the state competition. We hope that her vision of peace will ultimately be shared with others around the world," Bealer said. Bealer serves as first vice president of the Hellertown Lions Club.

Locally, Hodes and the other top two finishers in the district peace poster contest will be recognized for their participation during the District 14-K Convention in the spring. The trio will be invited to the convention to receive their posters, which will be framed.

Earning second place in the competition was Micaela Herczeg, sponsored by Alton Park Lions Club.

Earning third place in the District 14-K contest was Katie Bacher, sponsored by Lower Lehigh Lions Club.

The other contestants, who were all first place winners in contests sponsored by their local Lions Clubs, were:
